This is day number 159 and you’re 23 weeks pregnant!

Baby’s age since conception is 145 days or 21 weeks.

This pregnant body

Now that you have reached your 23rd week, your body is beginning to prepare for the impending delivery of your baby, at around 40 weeks. At your OB appointments your doctor will measure your fundal height.

The fundus is the round upper portion of the uterus, and the height of the fundus refers to the distance between the fundus and your pelvic bone. This is a routine and accurate way of measuring the growth of your baby. Don’t worry if you are not right on target for size. Each pregnancy is unique and the variation of fundus size is natural and quite normal.

Baby development

Your baby now weighs a little less than one pound, and is about 8 inches from crown to rump. He or she is continuing to develop facial features and you are probably feeling a lot of movement as your baby continues to explore its body and world in the comfort of his or her own personal “living womb.”

Your baby now has eyes that open and close, ears that can hear, and a thumb well worth sucking. If you notice feel your baby making regular, jerky movements, don’t panic – your baby has the hiccups! The hiccups are harmless for baby but can be annoying for you if they last for a long period of time.

Only a few more weeks and you’ll be in the home stretch: your third trimester! In the last few weeks of your second trimester, you are probably feeling a little tired, a little hungry, and a little uncomfortable much of the time. I can only tell you that the joy that your newborn brings will make all of these hurdles of pregnancy seem inconsequential. (You really have to trust me on this one!) If you are having a tough time thinking of what to have for dinner, here are some delicious and nutritious recipes that are so easy to prepare, your partner may even make them (hint, hint).

Baby development

Your baby weighs about 11 ounces, measures about 7.6 inches from head to rump, and is growing eyelashes and eyebrows. These two latest developments will be a key method of communicating his or her happiness, frustration, confusion, or interest until he or she can talk.

Week 21 Pregnancy Tip

Dealing with frequent urination

As your baby grows, there’s less room for your bladder to expand, which may leave have you visiting the restroom more often. Here are some strategies to help you deal with the increased frequency:

  • Don’t try to “hold it” and wait. This could cause other problems with your bladder, such as irritation.
  • Make sure you empty your bladder completely every time. Wait for a few seconds after you finish, and see if you have to go again before you get up.
  • Drink less in the evenings to avoid sleep interruptions.

This is day number 146 and you’re 21 weeks pregnant!
You have 134 days or 19 weeks left, and are 52.5% of the way there.
Baby’s age since conception is 132 days or 19 weeks.

Baby Development

Your baby weighs approximately 10.5 ounces and is about 7.2 inches from head to rump and is busy moving within your uterus, surrounded by amniotic fluid. He or she is learning how its arms and legs move, and using its hands to feel its facial features, which you may be able to see on an ultrasound. Most clinics and hospitals offer to videotape your ultrasound for a nominal charge; it’s a great keepsake!
